Neil and Donna are at the big screen today in town. If you have a chance pop down and see them. They are carrying out the Plymouth Aural Survey, in which they approach pedestrians who are wearing headphones and ask them a series of questions, such as “Where have you come from?” and “Where are you going?”. Then they will request to record 20 seconds of audio from the participants audio player. These recordings will be compiled (in real time or to an exact ratio) to recreate an audio canvas of the day, and will be mapped as a flash animation plotting the course of individual participants along with data from their questionnaire.

Tom Smith’s film xoFyrutneCht02 being shown in the Video Takeaway Heres a few questions I asked Tom. How do you feel about your work being shown in a takeaway restaurant in Plymouth and why is it interesting? I feel good about the project I liked the sound of it instantly, it seemed very pop and fun. I guess the interesting part comes by way of the fact that the audience is unsuspecting and so maybe that gives the work more of a chance to leave a trace. How do you expect the film to be received by the captive audience of the takeaway? Short answer is I have no idea. I guess there will be a range of reactions given that the audience will not have a shared interest in video art. Hopefully some will find it interesting or just odd while it stands to reason others will be pissed off that they have to watch it instead of MTV Base. How would you like your work to be received by the captive audience? xoFyrutneCht02 seems like a good fit, the original Fox ident is well known and wouldn’t be considered out of place on any TV. In this ‘real world’ setting I hope its effect will be more subtle then when it has been shown in a gallery. This subtlety may come from the difference in expectations or whether or not full attention is being paid. Also check out his website here.
